On Wednesday, audiences got their first look at Kate, a new action movie that stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as an assassin with 24 hours to live. This dynamic thriller is Netflix's most recent foray into the action genre after the success of Gunpowder Milkshake last month.
From the trailer, it seems that Winstead's character (the eponymous Kate) will be a seasoned killer who is commissioned to assassinate a Yakuza leader, only to botch the hit after being mysteriously poisoned. This attracts the attention of her target's henchmen, who attempt to kill Kate as revenge. She is forced to rely on her handler (Woody Harrelson) and a zesty young girl with a connection to Kate's past (Miku Martineau) in order to evade her hunters and find the answers she seeks. On top of all of this, Kate is on a ticking clock: the aforementioned poison will kill her within 24 hours.
Produced by David Leitch, who directed Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, and Hobbs & Shaw, and starring Winstead, who's an action veteran (Birds of Prey, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) it's clear that the fighting in this film is going to be handled by professionals. In the trailer, brief snapshots reveal that Kate will do battle using sniper rifles, martial arts, concealed knives, machine guns, and even a grenade. The variety of violence and the female leads will set Kate apart in a genre that has increasingly sought to up its ante in the wake of stunt-laden game-changer films like John Wickand Mission: Impossible – Fallout.
Kate is currently scheduled for a release on September 10th, 2021.
