"Lightyear," a movie based on the origins of "Toy Story" character, Buzz Lightyear, premiered June 17 to critical acclaim, despite a controversial choice.

The film's director, Angus MacLane, made the decision to cast Chris Evans as the iconic character instead of the original voice actor, Tim Allen. While fans were excited to see Evans in such an iconic role, some weren't as thrilled, including Allen's co-star in the original films, Tom Hanks.

Hanks, voice of Woody, recently broke his silence regarding the change in cast. Hanks worked alongside Allen for four movies in nearly twenty-five years. In an interview with CinemaBlend for his latest role in the Austin Butler-led "Elvis," Hanks joked about wanting his movie to compete with his old friend.

"I wanted to go head to head with Tim Allen and they didn't let Tim Allen do it. I don't understand that."

Nevertheless, Hanks expressed his excitement to see how Evans will interpret the character in "Lightyear." As for whose movie comes out on top in the box office, Hanks said,

"Just as long as people come back to the motion picture theater. I want to go back in the theater with a bunch of strangers and leave with something in common."

Allen previously addressed his absence in an interview with Extra, sharing his thoughts regarding not reprising his role in "Lightyear."

"The short answer is I've stayed out of this 'cause it has nothing to do [with my character],"

Allen views the film as a completely separate entity from the first movies, mentioning that the movie was run by a “whole new team,” and the storyline had “no connection to the toy.”

Despite the chatter online, "Lightyear" has been well received by fans of its paternal series, reaching 85% on the Rotten Tomatoes audience score.
