Based on the book of the same name by Margaret Atwood, the series follows June (Elisabeth Moss), a handmaid in the Boston area of the new nation of Gilead. In this new nation, the new governing body takes control of everyday life. Handmaids are subjected to child-bearing slavery, being forced to live and abide by the rules of their post assigned by the state. Throughout the previous seasons, June and other handmaids work to see their freedom from their oppressors.
The Handmaid's Tale is no stranger to award shows, and the series has a chance to take home a lot of hardware this Sunday in part due to the stellar supporting cast.
Madeline Brewer, who plays Janine, is nominated this year for Best Supporting Actress. Brewer's portrayal of the vulnerable but strong handmaid has earned her a ton of recognition over the years, and the star is now alongside Elisabeth Moss on the nomination board. We spoke to Brewer about starring opposite Moss in a series as powerful as this one:
"She's (Elisabeth Moss) a great actress. How do say this without just sounding like "Oh, yeah Lizzy is a great actress." Lizzy is one of the best actresses I have ever seen in my life."
Alongside Elisabeth Moss and Madeline Brewer is Alexis Bledel, who plays Emily in the series and is nominated this year for Best Guest Actress. The star has been a mainstay since season one, and Bledel tells us why she is so passionate about the role:
"The character was just amazing, even in the first episode. They gave her so much to do and really not in a lot of time. They really utilized every moment with her and I just thought that this is a great role."
The Handmaid's Tale has already been picked up for another season. But that's not all for the Handmaid's universe. There is a spinoff in the works based on the sequel novel titled The Testaments. Executive producer Warren Littlefield gave us insight into where things currently stand:
"We don't yet know when the end of Handmaid's will be. So we're thinking about that and then probably give a sense of completion to that and then transition to The Handmaid's Tale: The Testaments."
The Handmaid's Tale will hope to capitalize on a captivated fourth season this Sunday at the 2021 Emmy Awards.
