The Duffer Brothers Confirm "Body Count" in New Installment of Stranger Things

"Stranger Things" is already coming back to Netflix this Friday, July 1st with Season 4, part 2. In light of its premiere, the creators and executive producers of the award-winning show, Matt and Ross Duffer, sat down with Variety to answer some of fans' most-asked questions.

The brothers told Variety that "Stranger Things" was actually inspired by the Montauk Project, a conspiracy theory surrounding a US military government campaign to kidnap psychic kids. This emcompasses a lot of the dark and paranormal themes in the show.

“We love conspiracy theories,” Ross said.

Since the show’s release in 2016, the cast has almost doubled. Fans have been worried about whether some of their favorite characters of the expanding cast will be killed off in the upcoming chapter. Matt addressed these concerns by saying the death of a character used to be very calculated, however, as the show is coming to an end, “a lot more is on the table than in the past.”

The interviewer, Kate Arthur, then asked whether there will be a “body count” at the end of this season, and Matt replied by saying,

“Yea, there will be for sure.”

The Duffer brothers also addressed one of the on-screen discrepancies fans noticed in part one of season four. In a scene where Millie Bobby Brown’s character, Eleven, was being filmed, the date on the corner of the camera’s screen was March 22. Fans were able to trace this date back to the second season; it was Will’s, Noah Schnapp’s character, birthday. Will’s mom, Joyce, played by Winona Ryder, had said it in a scene. This would mean, every character in the show, including his mother, forgot his birthday in the recent season.

Fans expressed their concerns on social media, but in a past interview with Variety earlier this month, Ross confirmed it was a mistake and apologized, saying,

“It was obviously a mistake, and we’re sorry. We apologize to the fans.”

In their recent interview, the brothers further expressed their contention, saying,

“It’s too sad! And it doesn’t make any narrative sense.”

The Duffer brothers shared their excitement over how the story will unravel in the next part of the popular series.
