A man who didn’t want his girlfriend to get an abortion fatally shot her.
Gabriella Gonzalez, 26, was killed by Harold Thompson, 22, in a Dallas parking lot shortly after returning from Colorado, according to police. Gonzalez had returned to Texas one day prior after travelling to receive an abortion.
Surveillance video shows Thompson attempt to put Gonzalez, who pushes him off and continues walking. Thompson then pulls out a gun and shoots Gonzalez once in the head, then shoots multiple times as she lays on the ground.
“Further investigation revealed that [Gonzalez] went to Colorado to get an abortion and returned the night before. It is believed that the suspect was the father of the child,” the affidavit for Thompson's arrest reads. “The suspect did not want [Gonzalez] to get an abortion.”
Gonzalez's sister, Mileny Rubio, was a witness to the shooting, and recounted the events to local news network KXAS.
“I heard gunshots and immediately knew it was her and when I looked back, it was her. She was on the floor,” she said. “I was in shock. I couldn’t touch her. I couldn’t move. My body froze. I just called my mom and I couldn’t even explain to her.”
Texas banned abortions after six weeks of pregnancy in September 2021, but has since halted abortions in the state since the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Exceptions only exist in cases of medical emergency.
Thompson was charged with murder as of Friday and is being held in the Dallas County Jail without bond. He had already been charged with choking a woman in March, who has not been confirmed to be Gonzalez, but told police at the time that he “beat her up multiple times throughout the entirety of their relationship," and that she was pregnant with his child.
The woman “reiterated that she is scared of the suspect because he had made threats to harm her family and her children," according to the affidavit.
Rubio added that Gonzalez and Thompson had just ended a 4-month relationship that the family knew was tumultuous, but that they weren't sure how to address.
“I knew she wasn’t OK but we couldn’t help, we didn’t know how,” Rubio said, adding, “He was so angry that she wanted to get away from him. She would always tell me that she wanted to leave, but that she couldn’t.“
Gonzalez is survived by her family, including her three young children.
