The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is warning the country against "MAGA Republicans" after conservatives in Iowa pushed through a six-week abortion ban.

Holding a special session specifically to force an abortion ban, Republicans in Iowa voted Tuesday to pass legislation that will prohibit the procedure in the state after six weeks. Abortion in Iowa was previously legal up for 22 weeks into pregnancy.

The GOP holds large majorities in both the state House of Representatives and Senate. The bill now heads to Republican Governor Kim Reynolds for signature. Abortion providers in tandem with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) have since sued to block the legislation.

In a press release Wednesday, the Democratic National Committee slammed “MAGA Republicans” for forcing their anti-abortion will onto Americans, most of which are opposed to banning the procedure. A survey from the Pew Research Center earlier this year found that more than 6 in 10 say that abortion should be legal in all or most cases, whereas less than a third believe it should be illegal in all or most cases.

“MAGA Republicans just passed a bill that would force Iowan women to give birth,” DNC Chair Jaime Harrison said. "Republican abortion extremists are running for the highest office in the United States, and we know they won’t stop until they rip away reproductive freedom from every woman in this country."

Harrison noted that bans such as Iowa's are "only possible" because former president Donald Trump was able to appoint several conservative Supreme Court justices, who voted to overturn the national right to abortion. They also highlighted the fact that all of the current front-runners for the Republican presidential candidate nomination in 2024 are anti-abortion, urging voters to “take it from the candidates themselves."

“MAGA Republicans’ relentless crusade against abortion won’t end until they ban abortion nationwide,” they wrote.
