Ellen Pompeo

In celebration of National Doctors Day, we're taking a trip down memory lane with some of the best past and current doctors of television history.

Whether they were a doctor on our television screens 20 years ago or 20 minutes ago, every doctor on this list is a fan favorite helping us celebrate National Doctors' Day.

Dr. Derek Shepherd

Of course Patrick Dempsey had to be on this list. Being one of the OG doctors on Grey's Anatomy (2005) Derek Shepherd was a fan favorite for ten years. As one of the best neurosurgeons in the country, Shepherd was even asked to leave his home with Meredith and their two, soon to be three, children to work for the U.S. government. On top of all that, Shepherd was the former Head of Neurosurgery and board director at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Shepherd is the creator of the iconic quote,

"It's a beautiful day to save lives."

Dr. Christopher Turk

Played by Donald Faison, Dr. Christopher Turk is the Chief of Surgery at New Sacred Hospital and teaches courses at Winston University. Pictured alongside Turk is Dr. Elliot Reid (Sarah Chalke) and his best friend Dr. J.D. Dorian (Zach Braff). Turk is humorous throughout the entirety of Scrubs (2001-2010), the lighthearted medical comedy.

Dr. Doug Ross

Perhaps George Clooney's breakout role was through his character Dr. Doug Ross on ER (1994-2009). The five season character is a passionate pediatrician who may let his love of patients sometimes mask his judgement as a doctor. Nevertheless, Dr. Ross is a fan favorite and an iconic television doctor.

Dr. Shaun Murphy

Dr. Shaun Murphy is a surgical resident at St. Bonaventure in The Good Doctor (2017-). With autism and savant syndrome, Shaun is able to navigate different challenges in creative ways. Played by Freddie Highmore, Shaun is a caring doctor who wants to help others after the struggles he dealt with throughout childhood.

Dr. Meredith Grey

Dr. Meredith Grey of Grey's Anatomy is the Chief of Surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Played by Ellen Pompeo, Meredith is a passionate and intelligent doctor who overcomes all of the obstacles life has thrown at her to care for her patients and family.

Dr. Mindy Lahiri

Mindy Lahiri of The Mindy Project (2012-2017) isn't your typical OBGYN. Portrayed by Mindy Kaling, Dr. Lahiri navigates love and life as a young woman, while also maintaining a successful career as a doctor and businesswoman, owning her own business Lahiri Fertility Clinic. Having graduated from Princeton, Lahiri is very intelligent and has performed labors using creative techniques her colleagues were too afraid to.

Dr. Greg House

Perhaps one of the most sarcastic doctors takes the form of Greg House of House (2004-2012). Played by Hugh Laurie, House is a diagnostician who is faced with a new interesting character every week. Using mostly unorthodox and unapproved methods, House creatively figures out what is wrong with his patients, but still always gets in trouble for his approach.

Dr. Cristina Yang

Dr. Cristina Yang of Grey's Anatomy is definitely a fan favorite. Portrayed by Sandra Oh, Yang is now the Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Klausman Institute for Medical Research, but trained alongside Meredith and their fellow residents at Seattle Grace and Grey Sloan Memorial. Yang is one of the strongest women the television has seen, valuing her own brain as a worldly prized possession and never letting anyone forget that.

Doctors along with our other frontline and essential workers are the reason the world is spinning, especially in today's time. We can't thank them enough for all the time and energy spent on ensuring we're alive and healthy.

Happy Doctors' Day to all and thanks for all you do!
