NBC's Annie: Live is set to air this holiday season, with Taraji P. Henson playing one of the title roles.
Taraji P. Henson, the Oscar-nominated actress and Fox's Empire star, is lending acting chops and musical talent to upcoming NBC'sAnnie Live as the villainous orphanage head, Miss Hannigan.
The actress gushed about her new role in an Instagram post this morning.
Annie Live will be the next in the growling list of live network TV musicals that have become popular recently. NBC kicked off the trend with The Sound of Music Live! with Carrie Underwood in 2013, and Fox and ABC have followed suit in recent years with remakes of their own.
Despite the largely negative response to 2020's Dr. Seuss' The Grinch Musical Live! starring Glee actor Matthew Morrison, NBC is looking forward to this newest remake.
Susan Rovner, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming's entertainment content chairman, said in a statement released by NBC:
"When we decided to bring back NBC's holiday musical tradition, we were looking for something that was critically acclaimed and universally beloved — and while that's definitely the case with Annie, it absolutely applies to Taraji as well. Watching her take on this iconic role will be a thrill that has all the makings of must-watch television."
Other live musicals that have aired on the network include Peter Pan Live! in 2014, The Wiz Live! in 2015, Hairspray Live! in 2016, and Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert in 2018.
