Said to be Netflix's "biggest-ever series launch" according to Variety, "Squid Game" is coming back for season 2. To learn more about the show and its release date, cast, and plot, keep reading!
The first season of the series was released on Netflix back in September of 2021. It was an immediate hit, quickly becoming the biggest series to ever launch on the streaming service, according to Netflix. All platforms of social media were flooded with news from the show, as fans showed their appreciation and interest through various trends. Characters from "Squid Game" were also some of the most popular Halloween costumes this year, just a month after of the show's release.
Since the show was extremely successful, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk shared with IndieWire:
“Now that it’s become such a big hit, people would hate me if I don’t make a season 2, so I feel a lot of pressure and think I’d have to.”
Season 2 is rumored to be released in 2023 or possibly 2024. There is not a lot of information on the cast since...spoiler alert, the majority of them died during season 1. Though it is expected that Lee Jung-Jae will return as Gi-hun for the new season. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Dong-hyuk revealed some information about season 2.
“It’s true that season one ended in an open-ended way, but I actually thought that this could be good closure for the whole story, too,” Dong-hyuk said.
Dong-hyuk also added:
“There are some other stories in the series that have not been addressed.”
We're unsure of what exactly to expect from season 2, but that adds to the thrilling nature of the series.!
