Dax Shepard has struggled with addiction for a large part of his adult life and has been vocal about it throughout the later portion of his career. He uses that same philosophy of openness with his daughters when it comes to relapsing.
Shepard had been sober for 16 years before his relapse last year.
Shepard and his wife Kristen Bell have two daughters, Lincoln, 8, and Delta, 6, and the parents stay pretty candid with their girls when it comes to these matters.
Shepard took to Chelsea Clinton's In Factpodcast on Tuesday to share the story.
"They knew when I relapsed. We explained, 'Well, daddy was on these pills for his surgery and then daddy was a bad boy and he started getting his own pills,'" he said. "Yeah, we tell them the whole thing."
Shepard also revealed how he is open with his girls about attending AA meetings.
"They know that dad goes to an AA meeting every Tuesday and Thursday. One of the cuter moments was — I wanna say my oldest daughter was 3 ... said, 'Where are you going?' I said, 'I'm going to AA.' She said, 'Why do you have to go?' I said, 'Because I'm an alcoholic and if I don't go there, then I'll drink and then I'll be a terrible dad," he recalled while chuckling. "And she said, 'Can I go?' I said, 'Well, no, you got to be an alcoholic.' And she goes, 'I'm gonna be an alcoholic.' I said, 'You might become one. The odds are not in your favor, but you're not there yet.'"
On Shepard's 16th sobriety anniversary, Kristen shared this adorable sign one of her daughters gifted them.
Appropriate and open conversations about alcoholism and addiction with children can be an important way to inform them, and we're glad Shepard and his wife are raising their girls with that in mind.
