Justin Bieber and Shawn Mendes have finally joined forces. The artists released their new single (and music video) 'Monster,' which will appear on Mendes' upcoming album Wonder, out December 4th. The song explores the harsh realities of stardom, something Mendes believes he and Bieber both identify strongly with.
The star told Apple Music's Zane Lowe,
"It's about how society can put celebrities up on a pedestal and watch them fall, and it seems to be this entertainment thing... And him and I, even yesterday, were on the phone for an hour and had the deepest conversation, I think, about so much."
Mendes went on to acknowledge the surreal nature of working with Bieber, crediting the Holy singer as the inspiration behind his career. Mendes said,
"I was nine when "One Time" came out, and I completely was all in. He was Elvis to me. And to come back around and to have this very human to human conversation with him and his truth to come into that song and my truth to be there, it feels like one of the most special songs I've ever wrote."
The song exposes vulnerable sides of both Mendes and Bieber. This might not be surprising for Bieber fans (Beliebers), however, as the artist has been very open about his own struggles in recent months, especially regarding mental health.The singer released instant hits Lonely in October and Holy in September, further sharing his own pain and healing.
