Ever wonder what it would be like to be trapped in a Broadway musical? Look no further than Apple TV+'sSchmigadoon!
The Lorne Michaels produced series Schmigadoon stars SNL veteran Cecily Strong and comedian Keegan-Michael Key as a couple who stumble into an alternate musical reality while on a backpacking trip trying to improve their relationship.
The town they find themselves in, called Schmigadoon, is populated with charming characters who welcome them with open arms and songs at the drop of a hat.
Schmigadoon is also comprised of lots of famous faces from both the stage and the big screen.
Fred Armisen, another SNL alum, plays Reverend Layton, and Tony award winner Kristin Chenoweth plays his wife, Mildred. Other townsfolk include Broadway's Aaron Tveit, Jane Krakowski, Alan Cumming, Martin Short, and Disney superstar Dove Cameron.
"Every time I get a job like this, I'm always like, I can't believe I'm getting away with this. I can't believe people are letting me live my most fun life. It's my dream and this specific project, this cast, and who's creating this, it's the ultimate dream," Dove Cameron said.Since Broadway has been closed for well over a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Schmigadoon! is giving viewers the theater experience from the comfort of their own homes.
"It's a bit of a perfect love letter, and somehow it's coming out at a time where obviously Broadway is coming back, and people are very excited about that, so I just think it's a really special thing that we got to do and be a part of kind of as the only people maybe in the world getting to do a musical, which is really really cool," Aaron Tveit said.
Actress Ann Harada shared a similar sentiment.
"It is absolutely a love letter to the golden age of musicals, to Broadway, to Broadway people. The fact that they used so many of us in the show is so exciting," Harada said.
Despite it being a musical, Schmigadoon! has something for everyone.
But then there's a lot of open silliness. I think that this is like a true show that would engage everybody at every age, even if some of it goes over their head. I think that it's definitely timeless," Cameron said.
