Samuel L. Jackson, Elaine May, Liv Ullman, and Danny Glover are all being honored by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization behind The Oscars, for the 12th annual Governors Awards.
The four actors are being awarded by the Academy's Board of Governors due to their "Profound impact on both film and society" According to Academy President David Rubin. The awards, which will be presented in Oscar Statuettes, include The Honorary Award, which is being handed to Jackson, May, and Ullman, and The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, which is going to Glover.
The Honorary Award is given "to honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy", while the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award is given "to an individual in the motion picture arts and sciences whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry."Samuel L. Jackson is known for his iconic presence in the action film industry, and is one of the highest grossing actors of all time. He was nominated for an Oscar for his role as Jules Winnfield, the erratic hitman from Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction. His other notable roles include Stephen from Django Unchained, Ray Arnold from the original 1993 Jurassic Park, and Nick Fury in Marvel's Avengers series.
Elaine May is a comedian, screenwriter and actress who got her start in improvisational theatre. She is known for her work in the 70s and 80s, with films such as The Heartbreak Kid, Ishtar, and Mickey and Nicky. She is stated to be "bold and uncompromising" in her approach to filmmaking.
Liv Ullman is a Norwegian actress and director who is regarded as one of the greatest European actresses of all time, and is known for her work with the Swedish director Ingmar Berman. She received Oscar nominations with her films The Emigrants and Face to Face. Her acting is commonly praised due to its "bravery and emotional transparency".
Danny Glover began his mainstream film career as Albert, the main antagonist in Stephen Spielberg's The Color Purple. His other notable films include Lethal Weapon and Dreamgirls. He is known for his dedication to human rights causes, and is currently a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
Although the 12th Annual Governors Awards was delayed due to the pandemic, it will now be held January 15th, 2022, and will be sponsored by Rolex.
