Ringo Starr, the legendary drummer of The Beatles, has lived a one of a kind life throughout his time in the band and beyond. Born in the 1940s, Starr found a way to rise up from a difficult childhood to become a global star. His musical passion and the significance he places on #PeaceAndLove continue to shine through all these years. In honor of Ringo's 80th birthday, we're sharing some facts about the iconic drummer.
Growing up in Dingle
Starr grew up in one of the toughest neighborhoods in Liverpool, where the focus was to survive. In Starrs words, in order to survive Dingle:
"You kept your head down, your eyes open, and you didn't get in anybody's way."
Not the Original Drummer
Starr was originally a drummer for a Liverpool band called The Hurricanes. During their 1960 tour stop in Germany, Starr met John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison. He was considered to be one of the best drummers in Liverpool at the time. The Beatles original drummer was Pete Best, but once Starr came into their lives, the band fit together perfectly.
Left-Handed
Ringo Starr is actually left-handed. He even learned how to play on a right-handed drum kit with his left hand.
Almost an Actor
There was talk that Ringo was the Beatle destined for an acting career after his performance in A Hard Day's Night. However, drumming took precedence.
Rolling Stone's Best Drummers
Rolling Stone has named him the fifth best drummer in rock history.
We're wishing a very happy birthday to Ringo!
