GLAAD, the world's largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization and 39 other LGBTQ+ organizations and film festivals have come together in fashion signing an open letter to Emmy voters encouraging support with 10's across the boards for the groundbreaking FX series Pose. Created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Steven Canals, the television show breaks through stereotypes of how transgender characters and actors are represented in society.

The letter specifically calls on Television Academy members to "nominate the deserving transgender and nonbinary who lead this series - Mj Rodriguez, Dominique Jackson, Indya Moore, Hailie Sahar, and Angelica Ross - in their respective categories, along with the series overall." Pose is a television drama about New York City's African American and Latino LGBTQ and gender-nonconforming drag ball culture scene in the 1980's and 1990's. The piece writes that the show "transformed the landscape of transgender representation in Hollywood and educated the world on who transgender people are, all while entertaining audiences with high energy, compelling drama, and authentic storytelling."

GLAAD released the document with the support of the Black AIDS Institute, Harlem Pride, Human Rights Campaign, Transgender Law Center, The Trevor Project, National LGBTQ Task Force, Family Equality Council, and many more.

The letter goes on to say that "for far too long, the transgender community has lived on the sidelines. Since the creation of moving pictures, this part of our own community has been represented through harmful depictions that have had a real-world impact on their lives."

Billy Porter, the show's star, became the first openly gay black man to win an Emmy for his role as Pray Tell in Pose. However, the letter mentions that "although the show also received a nomination for Outstanding Drama Series in its first season, more recognition is merited now. The talented transgender actresses, actors, and non-binary performers in this series have not yet been honored by Television Academy members and their performances deserve acknowledgment."

Voting for the 73rd annual Emmy Awards nominations takes place June 17-28. The Primetime Emmy Awards broadcast will take place on Sunday, September 19 on CBS.
