'Star Wars' will have their first-ever female director

Disney announced that the next Star Wars feature film is being directed by its first-ever female director, Patty Jenkins.

At Disney's Investor Day event yesterday, they announced a plethora of new content that will be released on all of its platforms including Disney+. They revealed that Patty Jenkins who has previously directed both Wonder Woman films will be directing the newest Star Wars feature film.

Rogue Squadron will be the next installment of the Star Wars franchise but it will feature a whole new generation of characters. According to Disney, "The film will introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill-ride and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy."

Patty Jenkins announced the news to her followers in a video she tweeted.

In the video, we see Jenkins rollerblading down a runway. She explains how her dad lost his life while fighting for our country as a fighter pilot and how that loss has driven her to want to make "the greatest fighter pilot movie of all time." She has struggled to find the perfect story to bring to life that vision but now she has found that story in Rogue Squadron. Jenkins is ready for flight; she has her iconic starfighter helmet and is ready to take off on this directorial journey.

Rogue Squadron will premiere in theaters in December 2023.
