Comedian, musician, actor Adam Sandler is beloved by many and has appeared in some of our favorite comedies over the years.
You might know Sandler for his "Hanukkah Song" and where he got his start on Saturday Night Live. He first started out as a writer on the show in 1990 before going on to star in the series from 1991-1995. After leaving SNL, he starred in some comedies that audiences enjoyed and a few that just totally flopped. Now, Sandler has a new Halloween film that's worth checking out, Hubie Halloween, and to honor the release we're taking a look back at some of our favorite performances by Sandler.
The Wedding Singer
Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore have starred in three films together and The Wedding Singer is what started it all. In this 1998 romantic comedy, Sandler stars as Robbie- a musician who performs at weddings and other celebrations singing the hits of the 80s while Barrymore stars as a waitress named Julia. Both are engaged, but to different partners. This adorable film is filled with laughs and great music.
Big Daddy
Director, Dennis Dugan, and Sandler teamed up working on many projects together over the years and Big Daddy is certainly one of our favorites. Sandler stars as Sonny Koufax- a lazy law school grad who adopts a young boy, Julian 'Frankenstien' McGrath (played by a Dylan and Cole Sprouse) to impress his girlfriend, but of course things don't go as planned and he becomes the unlikely foster parent. The film tells a funny and sweet story breaking down parenthood and foster care.
Punch Drunk Love
A film that featured Sandler in an emotional, dramatic performance can be seen in Paul Thomas Anderson's Punch Drunk Love. Sandler starred as Barry Egan. According to IMDB the film follows:
"A psychologically troubled novelty supplier is nudged towards a romance with an English woman, all the while being extorted by a phone-sex line run by a crooked mattress salesman, and purchasing stunning amounts of pudding."
The film stars Emily Watson, Luis Guzmán, and Philip Seymour Hoffman as the villainous Mattress Man, Dean Trumbell. Sandler earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical.
Happy Gilmore
Another film Dugan and Sandler teamed up for was Happy Gilmore starringChristopher McDonald, Carl Weathers, Allen Covert, Julie Bowen, Kevin Nealon, and Robert Smigel. The film tells a story of a failed hockey player with the goal to win a PGA tournament so he can save his grandmother's house with the prize money. Sandler's fans love quoting this film for its slapstick humor...a must watch scene is Bob Baker and Sandler's fight.
Uncut Gems
A performance that should have earned Sandler an Academy Award nomination is his performance in Uncut Gems. Sandler stars as a fast-talking New York City jeweler Howard Ratner who is drowning in debt as collectors are closing in. He risks everything in the hopes of staying afloat and alive. The role was out of the ordinary for Sandler's performances but is a must see film that's thrilling and sure to give you anxiety from Benny and Josh Safdie.
