The 2019 College Scandals

The investigation and related charges of Lori Loughlin and Mossimo Giannulli were made public in March 2019. The actor and designer were arrested after being accused of working with Rick Singer through payments adding up to $500,000 in order for their daughters to be admitted to the institution as members of the crew team.

Initially, the couple plead not guilty and decided to fight the charges. However, as evidence began piling up not in their favor, the two decided to plead guilty in May 2020 and are currently in prison.

Serving Time

Loughlin began serving her two month sentence on October 30 at the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, California.

Giannuli began serving his five month sentence on November 19 at the Federal Correctional Institution in Lompoc, California.

The pair was also fined $400,000.

Hesitation for the Interview

One of the three hosts of Red Table Talk, Adrienne Banfield Norris, made clear her hesitation and precautions going into the interview to fellow hosts, her daughter Jada Pinkett Smith and granddaughter Willow Smith. Norris noted the hypocrisy of a White woman coming to the show of three Black women looking for support when a whole community of Black people have been denied support for years.

Norris didn't hold back in the face of Olivia Jade either. Norris stated,

"I'm exhausted with everything that we have to deal with as a community, and I just don't have the energy to put into the fact that you lost your endorsements or you're not in school right now because, at the end of the day, you're gonna be OK, because your parents are gonna go in and they're going to do their 60 days and they're going to pay their fine. You guys will go on and you'll be OK, and you will live your life. There's so many of us that it is not going to be that situation. It makes it very difficult right now for me to care."

Before the Scandal

The endorsements Norris is referencing to are Olivia Jade's numerous brand deals she lost after the scandal broke out. Olivia Jade is a beauty influencer known by many for her YouTube channel where she creates hauls and beauty videos. Olivia was once in partnership with Sephora, HP, Lulus, and Amazon.

Once news of the scandal was confirmed, these brands decided to discontinue their collaboration with the influencer.

Olivia Jade's Reflection

Olivia explains how she doesn't expect nor want pity on any level. She is aware that what her parents did was wrong, but what's most surprising to the Youtuber is how many in her community don't see an issue.

When explaining her parents' thought process going into the scandal, Olivia states,

"In their heads, it was like, 'Everybody has a college counselor and I'm just gonna donate to a school like all my friends did with their kids,' and I think what's crazier is how so many people in our area don't recognize that it's wrong."

Olivia admits that she too didn't recognize the issue initially, which she now reflects on as a huge milestone for her personal growth,

"I walked around my whole 20 years of life not realizing, like, you have insane privilege. You're, like, the poster child of white privilege and you had no idea."

Olivia Jade hopes for a second chance to improve upon herself and show her growth as an individual over the past years.
