Australian country singer Keith Urban is opening up about his struggle with drug and alcohol addiction, sharing that his wife Nicole Kidman "saved his life."

The singer first entered rehab in Nashville for treatment in 1998. About a decade later, not long after he and Kidman married in 2006, he returned for a few more months.

In a new interview with The Sunday Times, the singer spoke openly about his road to recovery.

"Everyone does what they want to do to have a great time. I just realized I'm allergic to substances. Someone said, 'You have an allergy? What happens when you drink?' And I said, 'I break out in cuffs,'" Urban shared.

In 2016, Urban told Rolling Stone that Kidman staged an intervention for him to deal with his "demons." He also recently opened up further about the couple's rocky start following their nuptials.

"I caused the implosion of my fresh marriage," he told the magazine. "It survived, but it's a miracle it did. I was spiritually awoken with her. I use the expression 'I was born into her,' and that's how I feel. And for the first time in my life, I could shake off the shackles of addiction."

Urban described his wife's encouragement during his recovery in his 2009 song "Thank You."

He said,

"In many ways, it was the most powerful act of love to step into the fire and pull me out because she believed in me, and she saw something in me in such a way that she risked everything, everything, to trust me and pull me out of the fire and allow me then to do the right thing and come out into the light."
