What's New in Theaters this July?
While Spider-Man promises Fourth of July fireworks in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first post-Endgame film, the rest of the month brings an eclectic mix of action, comedy, horror, and documentary movies to bring you back to the multiplex.
From Disney's live action reboot of The Lion King to Quentin Tarantino's eagerly anticipated ninth film, here are the movies that will move the most popcorn this month.
Week One: July 1st through 7th
Spider-Man: Far From Home on July 2nd
Your friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man is swinging back into theaters for a massive Fourth of July week box office. As the sequel to Tom Holland’s well-received Spider-Man: Homecoming and the follow-up to Avengers: Endgame, this is going to be the hot ticket of the month.
Tom Holland is joined by Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio, as well as Peter Parker’s returning classmates Zendaya and Jacob Batalon.
Expect some surprises that set the course for the next phase of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe!
Midsommar on July 3rd
Last year’s Hereditary was a deeply disturbing and highly successful addition to the pantheon of horror films. For his follow up, director Ari Aster takes us to Sweden for a festival that promises more of a cult following than Burning Man.
The trailers are rightly mysterious, but it’s safe to say that the young tourists of this tale and viewers alike are in for some shocking surprises.
Week Two: July 8th through 14th
Stuber on July 12th
Kamail Nanjiani plays Stu, an Uber driver (Stuber — get it?). Dave Bautista plays his rider, a cop pursuing the man who murdered his partner. It’s safe to assume that things take a wrong turn and hilarious action ensues.
Will the cop get revenge? Will Stu get a 5 star rating? Watch to find out!
The Farewell on July 12th
Awkwafina stars in this drama about a depressing situation with an awkward twist. When her character, Billi, finds out that her grandmother has cancer and just weeks to live, she and her family travel to China for one last visit. This challenging situation is compounded by the fact that nobody has told her grandmother about this impending fate. Yikes.
Pretending they’re all gathered for a wedding, will the family keep the truth from grandma?
Crawl on July 12th
In this horror film, a young woman must search a hurricane-ravaged Florida town for her missing father. Despite the weather-inflicted destruction and rising flood waters, their biggest threat comes from the gigantic alligators who would gladly turn the survivors into snacks.
Hey, there had to be something to carry on the Sharknado tradition, right?
Easy Rider 50th Anniversary on July 14th and 17th
Fathom Events brings the iconic 1969 film to select theaters with a full 4K restoration. This unconventional film follows Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, and a young Jack Nicholson as they search for America atop all-American choppers.
Dennis Hopper also directs, bringing an uncensored look at late 1960s counter culture that has endured, in no small part, thanks to the unforgettable scenes captured in this classic.
Week Three: July 15th through 21st
The Lion King on July 19th
Disney’s reboot train keeps rolling with the latest in a line of live action remakes of classic animated films. This one is a little different, however, since its entire cast is comprised of computer generated animals.
Director Jon Favreau applies everything he learned from directing his recent remake of The Jungle Book along with some new tricks to bring the music and magic of The Lion Kingto the big screen in an all new way.
The film features the voice talents of Donald Glover, Beyoncé, Seth Rogen, Keegan-Michael Key, Billy Eichner, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and John Oliver. Naturally, James Earl Jones reprises his role as the voice of Mufasa.
David Crosby: Remember My Name on July 19th
This documentary features Cameron Crowe as a producer and David Crosby as a subject, so you can expect an eye-opening deep dive into the rock legend’s self-destructive life. Expect plenty of highs, and lots of lows.
Glory 30th Anniversary on July 21st and 24th
Fathom Events and Turner Classic Movies bring 1989’s Glory to select theaters for its 30th anniversary.
The movie stars Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes, and Morgan Freeman and tells the story of the first black regiment to fight for the North in the Civil War.
Denzel Washington won the Best Supporting ActorOscar for his performance as a runaway slave, turned soldier in this film.
Week Four: July 22nd through 28th
The Muppet Movie 40th Anniversary on July 25th and 30th
Fathom Events brings Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, and Fozzie back to the big screen as they traverse America with their sights set on Hollywood in this 1979 musical comedy classic.
Revisit the Golden Age of Muppets and remember how this gaggle of glorified sock puppets won our hearts.
The Mountain on July 26th
Tye Sheridan plays a young man without a mother who also loses his father. He finds work with a doctor, played by Jeff Goldblum, whose specialty is lobotomies — because it’s set in the 1950s.
This drama explores an America of that bygone era, highlighting the attitudes and practices of the time.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood on July 26th
Quentin Tarantino’s ninth film is a love letter to late-1960s Hollywood. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a washed-up Western star and Brad Pitt as his stunt double during a tumultuous transition for Tinseltown.
Margot Robbie plays Sharon Tate, and, yes, Charles Mansion and his infamous “family” play a role. Expect plenty of big name actors playing other big name actorsand quirky characters from La La Land past.
