Netflix Will Lose 'The Office' in 2021

The streaming giant is losing one of it's biggest shows in just 2 years! NBC Universal announced they bought back the rights for their upcoming streaming service.

If Netflix comes without The Office, I will send it back.

We knew this day would come. NBC Universal released a statement last week that The Office will no longer be available on Netflix after 2021. The statement explains NBC's plans to place the award-winning comedy on their streaming service, which is set to launch the same year.

This is a significant blow to Netflix, since The Office has been one of their top shows and one that's extremely difficult to replicate. With more and more streaming services being established after Netflix's huge success, Netflix and other early streaming platforms have turned to creating original content that can't be pulled.

NBC is anxious to get the ball rolling, especially after getting one of their biggest shows back. President of Universal, Pearlena Igbokwe, says:

“The Office is one of our most prized series, and we are thrilled it has found an exciting new home where generation after generation will continue to discover and rediscover Michael Scott’s most cringe-worthy moments, Jim and Pam’s will-they-or-won’t-they, and the incredible quirky ensemble that makes each episode a masterclass in comedy"

Netflix, on the other hand, is acting fast to make up for lost views. Their upcoming series Space Force, starring Steve Carrell and written by some of the creators of The Office, is set to release on Netflix sometime this year.

Does this mean we'll need to pay extra to hear Michael Scott say "Thats What She Said"? Maybe not! NBC Universal's new streaming service might not be running until next year, but we know that it will be free to those with cable and $12 per month for anyone else.

Don't worry, there are other options! You could always go old-school and order the DVD's from Amazon or buy the show on iTunes, both of which would be cheaper than one year of NBC's upcoming service.

Either way, I know I'll be celebrating with a big meal at Benihanas when The Office and I are reunited.
