Michelle Young Didn't See Her Split With Nayte Olukoya Coming

ABC

Former Bachelorette Michelle Young is finally opening up about her sudden breakup with Nayte Olukoya.

Michelle and Olukoya got engaged at the end of 18th season of "The Bachelorette." During the "After the Final Rose" episode, Bachelor Nation awarded the couple $200,000 for a down payment on a house to start building their life together – something that had never been done in the show's history.

Then six months after Olukoya got down on one knee, the couple called it quits. Young was welcomed on the The Ben and Ashley I Almost Famous Podcast with Bachelor Nation alums Ben Higgins and Ashley Iaconetti and shared that it was "not something that I foresaw."

Michelle mentions the breakup has been “emotional” for her, but she is fortunate to have had her friends and family to help her get through the difficult time. Following the show, Young and Olukoya managed the difficulties of long distance.

“We’re in two different places: he’s in Austin and I’m in Minnesota," Young said. "Long distance is difficult.”

The pair had previously announced on the show that the plan for the $200,000 was for Olukoya to move to Minnesota. However, putting the fantasy into fruition came with its own set of obstacles. When asked about the money, Young told HIggins and Iaconetti,

“I haven't officially decided, but I have started putting down some different things in place to give back, to build an organization, or just promote the change that I've been talking about. I think that'd be something that I'd feel really good about."

Young fought back tears as she revealed she wanted to give the money to somebody else and was “crying on the phone with one of the producers." It was also during this period that the reality star stepped away from teaching.

“Having the summer off and being able to step away from teaching that would have happened regardless of a relationship…I just needed to take a breath out of teaching.”
