"Jurassic World: Dominion," the third installation in the Jurassic World franchise, opened this past weekend with $143.3 million in box office sales in North America alone. The Universal Pictures film also grossed $398 million globally.

The studios have high hopes for the film as it heads into its second week in theaters.

Despite its successful opening, "Dominion" falls behind "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" in opening weekend draws. Its predecessor made $148 million during opening weekend. While the original 2015 "Jurassic World" made $208.8 million during opening weekend. Studios are betting the box office numbers will surpass the $400 million mark as the film enters its first official week in theaters.

While this addition to the Jurassic Park franchise got harsh reviews from critics, audiences have given the movie their approval with an A- CinemaScore, according to The Hollywood Reporter. But on the other hand, the film currently has 34% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The second highest-grossing movie this weekend was My Blue Summer, with $2.7 million. Next was DreamWorks Animation's The Bad Guys, which made $2 million, taking its running total to $43.1 million. In third place is the Australian prison film Escape from Pretoria, which made $700,000.
