A ‘Joker’ Sequel Is Coming!

Warner Bros.

Get ready... the Joker is making his return!

Director Todd Phillips revealed on Instagram that there’s a "Joker" sequel in the works. Phillips posted a photo of the script, which he wrote with Scott Silver, for the upcoming movie "Joker: Folie á Deux."

Joaquin Phoenix, who won an Oscar for playing the title role of the 2019 “Joker” film, is rumored to star. Phoenix reportedly read the script a while ago, but it is not yet confirmed to be featured in the project. The actor had previously said on "Popcorn with Peter Travers" that he would not return for a sequel unless he could find "some thematic resonance," as he did with the first movie.

While there weren't plans for a sequel originally, Warner Bros. reportedly assigned Phillips to write a sequel.

The origin story of "Joker" follows Arthur Fleck, a lonely clown in Gotham City who is driven to the edge as he undergoes a transformation into the Joker.

Phoenix, himself, told Travers he didn't know about any plans for a Joker sequel, but acknowledged that there were more stories they could explore for the character.

The first Joker was the highest grossing R-rated movie of all-time, bringing in over $1 billion worldwide. It earned 11 Oscar nominations.

The upcoming screenplay is titled “Joker: Folie à Deux;” the French reference is a medical term pertaining to a mental disorder which creates delusions between two people in close association. This film is expected to dive deeper into the character of Arthur Fleck.
