Hustlers Stars Jennifer Lopez and Constance Wu on Empowerment and Revenge
As 'Hustlers' struts into theaters, stars Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, and Cardi B are making the rounds with a message of female empowerment.
The film is based on a New York Magazine story about a crew of strip club employees who get back at the affluent Wall Street clients who have wronged them.
Jennifer Lopez plays Ramona, a character who summarized the premise best:
“These Wall Street guys … You see what they did to this country? They stole from everybody. Hard working people lost everything — and not one of these **** goes to jail!"
Ramona echoes a sentiment shared by many hard working people. regardless of their profession.
"The game is rigged and it does not reward people who play by the rules."
Constance Wu explained how empowering this film is, despite any preconceived notions some might have based on the subject matter.
“We’re humanizing women who haven’t been humanized in pop culture before.”
Jennifer Lopez was quick to add the movie's behind-the-scenes roles held by women.
“To have a movie that’s produced by women, written by women, directed by a woman, starring all women — that, in itself, is empowering, and we’re telling a story of some very interesting characters who are women.”
'Hustlers' hits theaters September 13th.
