Janelle Monáe Looks Extra Mysterious in The Glass Onion Trailer

Netflix

The trailer for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is finally here and Janelle Monáe is already stealing the show — which says a lot because this cast is wild.

The sequel to director Rian Johnson’s Oscar-nominated whodunit Knives Out, Glass Onion sees master detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) traveling to sun-soaked Greece when he’s invited to a reclusive millionaire’s private island. Of course, in no time a mysterious death occurs and it’s up to Blanc to peel back the layers of a mystery — you know, like an onion.

And who are the suspects? Well, that remains to be seen, but what we do know is that the film stars Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Jessica Henwick, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Madelyn Cline, Monáe, and Edward Norton. And according to Craig’s Blanc, they’re all in danger.

Looking extra mysterious is Monáe, who’s seen in shadows and peering at something through some plants. We can’t wait to see what she gets up to. Also of note, Bautista’s abs when we see him poolside, um... shooting his gun. Overall, the trailer looks gorgeously sun-soaked and chic, a big departure from the original film’s more stately and shadowy east coast setting.

Writer-director-producer Johnson promises that this film is a wild ride. “The phrase I kept coming back to and talking about the first movie is, ‘It’s a roller coaster and not a crossword puzzle.’ It’s a common mistake in writing whodunits, thinking that you’re making a crossword puzzle, and that the fun is that the audience is actually going to analyze all this and figure it out,” he told Tadum.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will make its global premiere on September 10 at the Toronto International Film Festival. After that, it will arrive in theaters on a yet-to-be-announced date before hitting Netflix on December 23. You can watch the trailer below in the meantime.
