To commemorate the 35th anniversary of Ghostbusters, Sony Pictures and Wizard World teamed up for the first-ever Ghostbusters Fan Fest!
The event took place at the Sony Pictures Studio Lot in Culver City, California from June 7th to 8th. Fans of the movie franchise had the opportunity to meet the cast, watch celebrity panels, and purchase limited edition merchandise. Members of the original film’s cast were in attendance, such as Ernie Hudson, Dan Aykroyd, Paul Feig, and Ray Parker Jr.
“Ghostbusters has been entertaining and delighting audiences of all ages for the past 35 years, and this milestone provides the perfect opportunity for a celebration of the franchise and the impact it’s had on popular culture,” said Jeffrey Godsick, the executive Vice President of Brand Strategy and Global Partnerships of Sony Pictures, in a press release.
Ernie Hudson said he felt humbled and appreciative seeing that the fans are still so passionate about the franchise after more than three decades.
“It’s amazing that, after all these years, so many people love the movie to the extent that they’re flying in from other countries, making their backpacks and their costumes and turning their cars into ectomobiles,” Ernie said.
Dan Aykroyd said they hadn’t predicted that the movie would be such a success, but they had always known that they were working on something special. While attending the fan event, he said it’s “an honor to give people so much joy.”
From the original film and the theme song, to the 2016 female-led film, the Ghostbusters franchise has been leaving it's mark on pop culture for decades.
“It’s been truly gratifying that what we have created 35 years ago has continued to entertain and resonate with two generations of audiences,” Ivan Reitman, producer and director of the 1984 film, said in a statement.
His son, Jason Reitman, will write and direct the newest Ghostbusters installment to be released in July 2020. This sequel, set in the present day will feature original cast members Sigourney Weaver, Bill Murray, and Dan Aykroyd. New additions to the franchise include Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon, McKenna Grace, and Paul Rudd.
