Based on a true story, Everybody's Talking About Jamie is a new movie musical available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video. We talked to the stars about turning Jamie's story into a film.
Everybody's Talking About Jamie is based on a musical of the same name, which was based on a documentary titled Jamie: Drag Queen at 16.
It follows the story of Jamie, a 16-year-old teenager with a dream to become a drag queen performer. Thanks to the support of his friends and mother, Jamie will overcome the bullying and discrimination to step into a truer version of himself.
The story is based on the real life of Jamie Campbell, who's played by first-time actor; Max Harwood. Harwood said that he's deeply honored by the opportunity to play this role:
"I've really loved being part of this and getting to play this role, it's such a huge honor. Especially being an openly gay person to be playing an openly gay young person in a film that's going to go to as many countries. I'm so grateful."
In the movie, Oscar nominee Richard E. Grant is a fellow drag queen and mentor to Jamie. Grant shared the main themes of the story:
"I never thought I'd be offered a singing dancing drag queen role in a movie musical. It celebrates diversity, inclusivity and more than anything tolerance."
Lauren Patel, another first-time actor, plays Jamie's classmate and best friend:
"I feel like sometimes when people are faced with something that they don't know they kind of run in the opposite direction."
And at its core, Grant said that "the message of the movie is to be loved and to be seen."
