Cynthia Erivo to Star in 'The Rose' Remake

Cynthia Erivo, the Grammy, Emmy and Tony Award winning English actress and singer, has signed on for a new exciting project. She will play the main character and produce a remake of the 1979 film The Rose for Searchlight Pictures.


The original film, starring Bette Midler in her screen debut, follows the story of a tough rockstar and her struggles in the demanding entertainment industry. Loosely based on the career of Janis Joplin, The Rose tackles themes of addiction and landed Midler an Oscar nomination.Erivo was launched into the spotlight for her critically acclaimed performance of Celie from The Color Purple on Broadway in 2015, where she received a Tony for Best Lead Actress in a Musical, a Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album, and Emmy for Outstanding Musical Performance in a Daytime Program. She was also nominated for Best Actress in the 2019 biographical drama film Harriet, where she depicted Harriet Tubman. The film was noted for the original song "Stand Up", which also received an Oscar nomination.

The remake is being produced by Searchlight Pictures, who are also responsible for beloved titles depicting self-destructive women such as Black Swan, Juno, The Favourite, and Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri.
