The star of Netflix's Dead To Mespoke out about her struggle with MS and all that comes with the disease.
Hi friends. A few months ago I was diagnosed with MS. It’s been a strange journey. But I have been so supported by people that I know who also have this condition. It’s been a tough road. But as we all know, the road keeps going. Unless some asshole blocks it.— christina applegate (@christina applegate) 1628577255
MS is a central nervous system disease that is highly unpredictable as it limits the brain's ability to properly communicate with the body. The cause of the disease is unknown although they have determined that women are 2-3 times for likely to receive this diagnosis than men are.
As one of my friends that has MS said “ we wake up and take the indicated action”. And that’s what I do. So now I ask for privacy. As I go through this thing. Thank you xo— christina applegate (@christina applegate) 1628579176
Christina Applegate first rose to stardom as a child actor on the show Married... With Childrenfrom 1987-1997. She has since starred in sitcom's like Jesse, Samantha Who?,and even played Rachel's sister in Friends. You may know her for her most recent role in Dead To Me on Netflix or as Veronica Corningstone from the Anchormanfilm franchise.
She has received both Emmy and Tony awards for her work and received four Golden Globe nominations over her career. We get the privilege of watching the industry veteran in her best show yet and it has been truly enjoyable to see the star continue to enjoy her career.
Applegate has provided generations with amazing television and we hope that she is receiving all of the love and support she needs from her family, friends, and the fans that grew up watching her. She is not a stranger to scary diagnoses unfortunately as the star revealed some of her health struggles back in 2008.
Applegate was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008 and underwent multiple surgeries to deal with the cancer and take preventative actions for the future. She has often spoken out about the issues she had with her body image during and after her health problems.
"I think about it every day. Girls who go through this, we say to each other, 'Yep, it's been 10 years,' but you're never not aware that that's something you've been through. Everything looks different. You have to shower and you're like, 'Oh, there they are. That happened.'
Applegate was discussing her decision to have a double mastectomy surgery in this quote and she actually decided to explore this more with her character in Dead To Me discussing how she underwent the procedure.
"It hasn't really been discussed on shows before; I don't think there's a lot of characters out there with double mastectomies. But I went through it, and it's a horribly painful process – emotionally, spiritually, physically – and I never really talked about it. I thought this was my chance to tell a little bit about me, but also all the women that have gone through that."
We hope that Christina Applegate can continue to find good health and healing throughout this diagnosis and that she receives all of the love and support she needs. We also would love for her to continue telling the stories of those that may not receive as much exposure, such as those that struggle with double mastectomies and the body issues that may follow. We wish the best for the star and hope that her transition to work and private life remains successful.
