Las Vegas Raiders Defensive Lineman Carl Nassib has come out as gay. Nassib took to Instagram yesterday to share with his fans and followers that he is gay and he is finally comfortable with his true self.

Nassib's Coming Out Post

In a video posted to his Instagram account, Nassib explains his reason for coming out.

"I just think that representation and visibility are so important. I actually hope that one day videos like this and the whole coming out process are just not necessary. But until then, I'm going to do my best and do my part to cultivate a culture that's accepting, that's compassionate, and I'm going to start by donating $100,000 to The Trevor Project," Nassib said in the video.

The Trevor Project is a nonprofit organization founded in 1998 that aims to prevent suicide in the LGBTQ community, a community at a higher risk for suicide. They do this through their suicide prevention hotline that is available 24/7 for anyone struggling.

In a written statement posted in conjunction with the video, Nassib thanks his family, friends, teammates, and the NFL for standing behind him.

He also underscores the importance of The Trevor Project and the prevalence of suicide in the LGBTQ community.

Nassib writes:

"Studies have shown all it takes is one accepting adult to decrease the risk of an LGBTQ kid attempting suicide by 40%. Whether you're a friend, a parent, a coach, or a teammate - you can be that person."

Since his post, Nassib has received an outpouring of support on social media. His team, the Las Vegas Raiders, even reposted his coming out message on their Instagram to show solidarity.

Celebrities have also lent their support to Nassib, with stars like former basketball player Dwayne Wade, comedian Billy Eichner, Queer Eye's Bobby Berk, and tennis legend Billie Jean King leaving words of encouragement on his post.
