After 14 months of marriage, Britney Spears and her husband Sam Asghari are getting a divorce.
Asghari filed for divorce on Wednesday in the Los Angeles Superior Court, though the documents reveal that he and Spears had been separated since July 28. Neither have commented publicly on the split.
Britney Spears' Husband Files For Divorce
The 41-year-old singer and 29-year-old dancer met in October 2016 when Asghari appeared in Spears' “Slumber Party” music video with Tinashe. The pair dated for five years before they wed in June 2022.
The two became engaged just months before Spears' conservatorship was officially terminated. Asghari had publicly defended Spears against her father, Jamie Spears, and the two were able to move in together after their wedding.
The pair navigated various unsubstantiated tabloid reports during their marriage, including an apparent intervention with Spears' family to address her alleged substance abuse and behavioral problems. Both Spears and Asghari denied that such a meeting occurred.
Spears said at the time that she was "not surprised at all," but "doing the best I can" to move on following the end of her 13-year-long conservatorship.
"As my hubby says it best: don't believe everything you read!!!" she wrote.
Asghari also publicly stated at the time: "My wife is in full control of her life and will continue to make all decisions involving her care regardless of circumstances. Speculation on her health is inappropriate and should end immediately."
While Spears has not yet commented on the divorce, she recently posted a photo to Instagram featuring herself riding a horse on a beach. She said that she is “buying a horse soon" and deciding between the names Sophie and Roar.
“I can’t make up my mind! Should I join the camaraderie and put a pink cowboy hat on?" she wrote, in reference to the recent blockbuster movie Barbie. "Either way I think I found my sweet spot with Roar!”
Spears was previously married to Jason Alexander for 55 hours in 2004, as well as Kevin Federline from 2004 to 2007. She and Federline share two children, 17-year-old Sean Preston and 16-year-old Jayden James.
