Justin Timberlake Writes Apology to Britney Spears and Janet Jackson

Justin Timberlake

Timberlake apologizes with Instagram post.

In a new Instagram post, Justin Timberlake apologized to both singers Britney Spears and Janet Jackson.

The recent documentary about Britney Spears, Framing Britney Spears, has been trending everywhere. So much so that #FreeBritney has been promoted by Miley Cyrus, Sarah Jessica Parker, Sam Smith and Kacey Musgraves to name a few.

Inevitably, there have been comments and critiques surrounding the "Cry Me A River" singer, after various clips in the documentary show a lack of care for Spears, whom he dated in the late 90s. Timberlake has now decided to apologize through an Instagram post.

Timberlake's Apology

The apology, however, is not only directed at Spears. Jackson is also mentioned for the Super Bowl incident in 2004, where Timberlake had pulled part of Jackson's clothing that led to the exposure of the singer's right breast. At the time, Timberlake had called the incident a "wardrobe malfunction."

"I specifically want to apologize to Britney Spears and Janet Jackson both individually, because I care for and respect these women and I know I failed."

But Timberlake also addresses the flawed system of the music industry.

"It sets men, especially white men, up for success. Because of my ignorance, I didn't recognize it for all that it was while it was happening in my own life, but I do not want to ever benefit from others being pulled down again."

The singer's hope is that this is just the beginning of a much broader conversation. One that furthers conversations around misogyny and sexism.

"I also feel compelled to respond, in part, because everyone involved deserves better and most importantly, because this is a larger conversation that I wholeheartedly want to be part of and grow from..."

You can watch Framing Britney on streaming service Hulu, on the FX cable channel or on FX's website.
