Happy Earth Day! Today is a day to remember our planet and how we have to take care of it. If it's too cold outside or you're just not feeling outside today, have no worries! Because nature movies and documentaries are the best part of Earth Day anyways. Let's get into it!
I Am Greta
Greta Thunberg is probably the fiercest environmentalist out there, age be damned. She's here to change the world, and she's not about to let you get in her way.
WALL-E
Let's kick things off with a Disney classic. WALL-E could be a perfect movie. It's a perfect warning against the overuse of resources while being a charming story of a brave little robot who overcame countless obstacles to save the day. It's wholesome, it's fun, and its message is important.
Also, Jeff Garlin is in this movie. Who knew?
Blue Planet
This is the creme de la creme of nature docs, that special something that only David Attenborough can bring. Sadly, this is no longer on Netflix, but luckily, it's on Discovery+.
Ocean life is vast and magical. An entire world beyond our grasp exists just beneath the waves. It's bigger than ours, more diverse than ours, and in many ways is smarter than ours. It's a fascinating look beyond the beach.
Free Solo
In addition to having some of the most beautiful nature shots you'll ever see, are you telling me you don't want to watch someone scale a 3,200 ft wall of rock without a rope? I certainly do.
I love watching antelopes run away from lions as much as the next guy, but this is the best thing National Geographic ever did. It's amazing.
Lord of the Rings
That's right, Lord of the Rings. If you didn't know, New Zealand is a deeply beautiful place, and probably the best spot for Middle Earth on the whole planet. The nature shots you get in these movies are breathtaking.
In addition to that, the entire storyline of Treebeard and the Ents involves nature striking back against the tyranny of industrialism, so there's a conservationist message in here too.
Elephant
Disney Nature has some of the best nature content out there for you, and this documentary on elephants is breathtaking.
They're some of the most majestic creatures on the planet. They're intelligent, endearing. They have deep cultural significance to many people, they're very very important animals. Go look at these beautiful titans of nature.
Planet Earth
Available now on Discovery+, Planet Earth holds a special place in a lot of our hearts. For people my age, it's the original, that show that first hooked you. This was the first time that a lot of people saw how truly beautiful our planet is, and that's a very special thing.
My Octopus Teacher
Octopuses are some of the most intelligent creatures on Earth, and some of the most deeply unique. There's really nothing like them. Except squids, but that's not the point. Take a closer look at one of the craziest creatures out there with this Netflix docuseries.
The Reverent
Leonardo DiCaprio's first Oscar winning performance has some remarkable scenes of nature with animals and forest all around. And, of course, that giant bear.
The Lorax
"I am the Lorax, I speak for the trees"
This was probably the first book about conservation I ever read as a child, and it could quite possibly be the saddest thing I've ever read. It delivers a profound message.
