The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently elected new members to join their Board of Governors, including writer, producer, and film director Ava DuVernay.
Other new members of the board include Whoopi Goldberg, Wynn P. Thomas, Teri E. Dorman, Ruth E. Carter, Roger Ross Williams, and DeVon Franklin. This is part of a historical wave for the Academy because there are now 26 women on the board, as well as 12 people of color.
Ava DuVerynay's Reaction
DuVernay took to Twitter to share her excitement about the news:
"Thank you to the members of the Directors Branch of @TheAcademy. Life is a funny, fascinating thing. You never know what's around the corner."
Due to the coronavirus outbreak, The Oscars will be extremely different this year and will allow streaming service films to be considered for awards. This makes the job of the board of directors a bit different than in years past.
Congratulations to Ava DuVernay and to all the new elected members!
