A documentary surrounding the tragedy that occurred at Travis Scott's Astroworld music festival in Houston is set to be released today.
On November 5, 2021 a massive crowd surge as Travis Scott's Astroworld in Houston left 10 concert-goers dead and hundreds more injured.
A documentary set for release today, April 29, details the frightening experience of concert-goers who say they couldn't move or breathe in the inescapable wave of people.
Lawyers from Live Nation, the festival promotion company who is being sued for their role in the incident, say they are concerned about the publicity that will come from the documentary, “Concert Crush: The Travis Scott Festival Tragedy."
The lawyers explained they fear the documentary will “taint the jury pool," in the ongoing case which has been issued a gag order by a judge.
However, Live Nation's lawyers claim an attorney who filed lawsuits related to the devastating event acted as a producer on the documentary.
The film's director Charlie Minn, said that he only wanted to document the truth surrounding what occurred at the concert that night.
“My job is to make the most truthful, honest, sincere documentary from the victim’s point of view ... We need to know about these stories to prevent it from happening again,” Minn told The Associated Press.
Following the deadly concert, nearly 500 lawsuits have been filed including ones against Scott directly for inciting the crowd.
The documentary will open in 11 cities around Texas including Austin, Dallas and Houston, and features interviews with several people who were in the crowd surge that day. The film also features first-hand footage of the scene from concertgoers cell-phones.
“It’s hard to explain to friends and family what we saw and what we actually went through and I think [the documentary] will give a lot of people the opportunity, if you weren’t there, to understand,” said Frank Alvarez, a concert-goer who will not be featured in the film.
While the film points out that Scott could have taken more action to prevent the situation that resulted in the casualties, Minn said it isn’t a “hit piece toward Travis Scott.”
Scott isn't the only one being called into question in the film, however, as Minn said it also looks at what Live Nation and the Houston police could have done to improve safety conditions and respond to the scene faster.
According to Minn Scott, Live Nation and the Houston police all declined to be interviewed for the documentary.
While Live Nation lawyers have concerns about the impact the film will have on the trial, Cassandra Burke Robertson, a law professor at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, said it was unlikely for the judge to take any action against the film, even with the gag order.
“I think the public interest here in exploring what happened and avoiding similar tragedies in the future, that’s a really big interest. That is likely to outweigh the interests of the particular outcome of the particular lawsuit,” Robertson said.
