'West Side Story's' Ariana DeBose Makes LGBTQ+ History at SAGs

One of the film's many stars made history during the 2022 SAG Awards on February 27th.

31-year-old Ariana DeBose is the first ever openly queer woman to win an individual award for a film at the Screen Awards Guild Awards.


The award show itself took place last night, February 27th, 2022 at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California.

DeBose took home the SAG Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her role as Anita in Steven Spielberg's 2021 adaptation of West Side Story'

DuBose was also nominated for an Oscar for the same role, making her the first openly queer woman of color to be nominated for an Oscar.

DeBose was up against Caitriona Balfe in Belfast, Cate Blanchett in Nightmare Alley, Kirsten Dunst in The Power of the Dog, and Ruth Negga in Passing.
