Antonio Banderas Joins Cast of 'Indiana Jones' Sequel

Antonio Banderas

The star-studded cast of Indiana Jones 5 has gained its latest addition.

The fifth addition to the Indiana Jones franchise only a year away from being released, but the cast is still taking shape. Over the past weekend, it was announced that Spy Kids star Antonio Banderas would be joining the film in an undisclosed role.

Banderas has been very busy over the past year, appearing in Dolittle with Robert Downey Jr. and Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard with Ryan Reynolds and Salma Hayek. In addition, the actor had to grapple with a positive COVID-19 test on his 60th birthday. Most recently, he was cast in the upcoming film adaptation of theUncharted video game franchise, which has strong similarities to the Indiana Jones franchise: a globetrotting adventurer, long-lost supernatural treasures, audacious stunts, and a zestful love interest.

This latest installment in the Indiana Jones franchise has been in development since the release of the controversial Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in 2008. The project became Disney property in 2013 when they purchased Lucasfilm, but progress only began in earnest in 2016. Over the following three years, the script was subject to numerous rewrites by a rotating cast of screenwriters, and Steven Spielberg, who directed the previous four films, dropped out and was replaced by The Wolverine director James Mangold.

Like with the recent Star Wars sequels, creator George Lucas is completely uninvolved. The project is instead being overseen by Kathleen Kennedy, who was responsible for The Rise of Skywalker. Harrison Ford is returning in his role as the titular character, and will be joined by Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Captain America actor Toby Jones, and Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen. Ford, Waller-Bridge, and Mikkelsen are all veterans of the Star Wars franchise, but so far Ford seems to be the only returning Indiana Jones character in the film (Neither Shia LaBeouf nor Karen Allen, who both appeared in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, have been mentioned in cast lists).

The currently-untitled fifth Indiana Jones film is scheduled for release on July 29, 2022.
