The Dropout follows the rise and fall of tech imitator Elizabeth Holmes and her faulty invention Theranos. Amanda Seyfried leads in the Hulu series as Holmes.
Kate McKinnon as Elizabeth Holmes
Originally portraying Holmes was comedian Kate McKinnon of Saturday Night Live (1975-). The actress' most recent film credit was as Jess Carr in the Oscar winning film Bombshell (2019) alongside Margot Robbie, Nicole Kidman, and Charlize Theron.
The actress reportedly dropped from the Hulu project in February for no announced reason as of yet.
Seyfried Taking Over
Mamma Mia! (2008) star Amanda Seyfried will now be taking on the role of Elizabeth Holmes in the Hulu series. The actress was recently nominated for an Academy Award for her role in Mank (2020).
Who's Elizabeth Holmes?
The backstory behind the series is based on the real life events surrounding Elizabeth Holmes. A Stanford dropout, Holmes was praised to be the next Steve Jobs of the tech industry. Her company Theranos and its product The Edison were once valued at nine billion dollars making Holmes one of the richest women in the world.
The idea behind the invention was a blood testing lab compacted in an at-home device. However, all of it was fake. It was discovered that her technology didn't do anything and Holmes had been keeping the blood test results a secret.
Putting lives in danger, Holmes was presented to a jury in 2018 on nine counts of wire fraud and two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. With the award-winning documentary The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley (2019) already out, the Hulu series will go further into what happened at Theranos.
There is no official release date for Hulu's The Dropout as of yet.
