This Friday, Al Roker, weatherman and co-host of TODAY spoke to viewers to announce that he has recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer and will be undergoing surgery.
Reassuring Fans and Fellow Anchors: "I'm gonna be OK"
Al Roker explained that during a doctor's visit, a high level of Prostate-Specific Antigen was found in his bloodwork. After an MRI and a biopsy, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer that he says was caught early. Roker's doctor, Dr. Vincent Laudone, joined him on the show and explained how they have come to the decision to have him undergo surgery to remove the prostate because of the cancer's aggressive nature. Dr. Laudone will perform the surgery next week at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.
Raising Awareness On Routine Checkups
Al Roker also explains how he wants to share his journey in order to urge men to get routine checkups. He tells viewers that 1 in 7 African American men will get diagnosed with prostate cancer sometime in their life and 1 in 9 men overall will be diagnosed with prostate cancer.
We are wishing Al Roker a speedy recovery at this difficult time.
