The school year of 2020 to 2021 can be described in a couple words with one being: transitional. As we reopen back to normalcy, let's take a look back on one of the craziest school years ever recorded.
1. We Have a Vaccine!
December 2020 marked the beginning of the Covid-19 vaccine distribution. With multiple vaccinations available including Pfizer and Moderna, more individuals are coming closer to living a normal life. Now, fully vaccinated people can even step outside without a mask.
If you are eligible to receive your vaccine please check out https://www.vaccines.gov for more information and a site near you.
2. Historical Presidential Election
This school year also saw the introduction of a new American president, Joe Biden. President Biden beat Donald Trump in the 2020 Presidential Election by seven million popular votes, the second largest victory margin since 2000. Did drama come with the election? Yes. Was our former president in attendance at the inauguration? No.
With that being said, Biden was accompanied by his First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, family, former office holders, Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, and more at his swearing in on January 20, 2021.
3. Reopening of Movie Theaters
Movie theaters re-opened with limited capacity at the beginning of 2021 as well. This re-opening surely took a part in the box office success of Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) in March of 2021. Now, with In the Heights (2021), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), and so much more coming to theaters this year, the movie theaters are sure to be bustling.
4. Music Artists Now on Tour
With more vaccines being rolled out, music artists are also returning to tour with such artists as Justin Bieber and Dan + Shay announcing nationwide performances for the latter half of 2021 and throughout 2022.
5. A Historical Year for Film
This year's awards season marked a historical year in cinema, especially for women of color. Director Chloé Zhao of Nomadland (2020) was awarded as the first woman of color and the second woman ever to win the Oscar for Best Director. Zhao was also awarded the Oscar for Best Picture and a Golden Globe for Best Director.
6. Dozens of New Shows and Series
Sitting at home all day was quite the challenge until network and streaming services began to pump out loads of new series and season premieres that had fans yearning to lay in bed and binge all day.
Such series that came out during the school year include Bridgerton (2021-), WandaVision (2021-), The Queen's Gambit (2020), and much more.
7. An Eye-Opening Season of 'The Bachelor'
Every season of The Bachelor (2002-) is dramatic, it's inevitable. However, Matt James' season was far from normal. After ignorant images of contestant Rachael Kirkconnell at an antebellum-themed party were released, the Bachelor franchise was under the spotlight.
It didn't help when longtime host Chris Harrison defended Kirkconnell and went so far as to insult the first-ever black BacheloretteRachel Lindsay, cancelling his appearance on the "After the Final Rose" special and possibly his hosting gig for the rest of time.
James and Kirkconnell revealed that after the scandal broke out, the two had decided to call it quits after Kirkconnell took the win for the season.
8. New NFL Champions
This school year also saw a new NFL championship team. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers took the victory on February 7 2021 with their last Super Bowl win being in 2003. Led by quarterback Tom Brady, the team made history for the NFL.
9. LA for the Win
Along with football came the basketball and baseball championships of Los Angeles. The Lakers took home the NBA Finals Championship on October 11 2020 with the Dodgers not too far behind in their 2020 World Series victory on October 27.
10. Bringing New Life to the World
And of course, this school year rewind wouldn't be complete without a nod to the new celebrity babies that were introduced to the world. Supermodel Gigi Hadid and singer Zayn Malik had their daughter Khai in September of 2020 with Oscar winning actress Emma Stone and director Dave McCary also welcoming a daughter in March 2021.
Congratulations to the Class of 2021 on completing quite the bizarre school year! Have an amazing (and safe) summer filled with light, love, and fun times.
