After a string of successful, live action remakes of classic animated films, Disney is set to bring Aladdin into a whole new world with its next adaptation.
Disney's Live Action Aladdin with Will Smith
Disney's original Aladdin became an instant hit when it flew into theaters in 1992. With its mix of timeless songs and unforgettable performances, it raised the bar for a new wave of animated movies.
When it was announced that the beloved favorite would receive the live-action treatment, everyones' immediate question was, "Who will play Genie?"
As the original voice actor, the late Robin Williams left big shoes to fill along with his iconic performance. Fortunately, the casting of Will Smith was largely met with relief and delight.
The film's first teaser footage kept its characters shrouded in mystery, reserving the honor of the reveal for Entertainment Weekly who put the three protagonists on its cover -- Aladdin, Jasmine, and Will Smith as Genie.
Their appearance in "full costume" led to a new round of critique, as many fans of the animated film assailed Will Smith's lack of blue skin -- a trademark feature of the character's earlier interpretation.
Responding to critics, Smith took to Instagram to clarify.
“This is how the Genie is in human / disguise form. My character will be CGI most of the movie.”
While this should relieve some trepidation about the movie's creative choices, we'll have to wait a bit longer to see if the magic of CGI grants our wishes.
The live action, musical Aladdin flies into theaters on May 24th, 2019.
