Will Smith Apologizes for Chris Rock Slap; Academy Launches Investigation

Will Smith has issued a public apology for his actions at the 2022 Oscar Awards.

Will Smith has apologized for his infamous Chris Rock slap at Sunday's Academy Awards.

The actor took to Instagram, where he called his actions "unacceptable and inexcusable." He added,

"Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive."
"Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada's medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally."

Jada Pinkett Smith has been open about her condition ever since being diagnosed with alopecia, an autoimmune disorder that leads to hair loss, in 2018. Rock's joke called her "G.I. Jane," referencing the role Demi Moore shaved her head to play.

Smith continued,

"I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness."

He went on to apologize to "the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world." The rest of his statement was dedicated to the Williams family, whose story won him the Best Actor Oscar shortly after the incident.

"I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my "King Richard" Family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us."

As for the consequences, the Academy released a statement on Monday afternoon, announcing they will be looking into Smith's conduct. They said,

"The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night's show. We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law."

Rock has declined to press criminal charges against Smith. Some are calling for his Oscar to be revoked, an unlikely punishment, as Harvey Weinstein and Woody Allen have kept theirs despite being removed from the Academy's board.
