Grey's fans brace yourselves! Tonight Grey's Anatomy comes back with the second part of season 17, but the looming question is still the same: will the show end this year?
Grey's Anatomy is a medical show that has got us intrigued in the vicissitudes and traumas of protagonist Dr. Meredith Grey and her colleagues. In 2007, Grey's Anatomy had won a Golden Globe for Best TV Drama and 14 years later, the show is still able to create engaging stories for these beloved characters.
Season 17 had started from what we're all currently experiencing: the coronavirus pandemic. Meredith Grey and her colleagues had to deal with this new medical emergency while trying to handle their own complicated private lives.
But things got more intense as our heroine caught COVID-19 herself and is now fighting for her life. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Krista Vernoff revealed:
"I'm planning a season and a finale that could function as either a season finale or a series finale."
Vernoff has already asked ABC to tell her ahead of time if season 17 is indeed going to be the last one.
"I've told them that I have to know before I'm making the finale. There are a couple of character threads that will change. Either there will be closure or I will build something in that allows me to have a bit of a cliffhanger and a thread for next season."
In a recent interview on CBS Sunday Morning, Ellen Pompeo confessed that she felt responsibility to end the show in the best possible way for the fans.
"To end a show this iconic, how do we do it? I want to make sure we do this character and the show and the fans... I want to make sure we do it right."
And fans are already grateful for Meredith having been temporarily reunited with McDreamy's in a heavenly universe on the beach at the beginning of the season. Patrick Dempsey's character had indeed died in season 11, leaving fans grieving with Meredith Grey.
Deceased friend and colleague George O'Malley, played by T.R. Knight also appeared on the beach, after his shocking death in the finale of season 5.
Things are still uncertain and although we may not know if the show is indeed going to end this season, we can thank Grey's Anatomy for having accompanied us all these years in a wild emotional roller coaster -- one that was full of joy, love, laughter and tears.
