'Watchmen' Will Be Completely Free On HBO This Weekend

In honor of Juneteenth, HBO is making Watchmen available for free for the weekend.

The 2019 breakout series Watchmen caught the attention of many for exploring the racial divides that exist in the United States. The Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 serves as the foundation of the show, and explores the lives of those who were impacted by it. In honor of Juneteenth and remembering those who lost their lives in the riots, HBO has decided to make the series free for the weekend.

The network spoke about this decision in a press release that came out Wednesday, saying:

"This is part of our initiative to highlight black experiences, voices, and storytellers to honor Juneteenth, the commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. HBO is proud to offer all nine episodes for free of this timely, poignant series that explores the legacy of systemic racism in America."

A show like Watchmen is extremely relevant at a time where change is needed so desperately in America. Due to the ongoing nationwide protests surrounding the death of George Floyd, HBO believes it is crucial for viewers to watch a show as important as this one. Watchmen showrunner Damon Lindelof took to Instagram to encourage his followers to stream Watchmen this weekend.

"Full marathon this Friday, free to stream all weekend long. Gratitude to HBO for making this happen and to the brilliant black storytellers who made these nine episodes vibrate with power and authenticity. #RememberTulsa21
