Oscar winners Barry Jenkins and Leonardo DiCaprio are teaming up to write and produce a feature film adaptation of the 2014 Oscar-nominated Netflix documentary Virunga.

The Netflix documentary directed by Orlando von Einsiedel follows a group of individuals dedicated to saving mountain gorillas. Here is the documentary's description according to the film's website:
"A powerful combination of investigative journalism and nature documentary, VIRUNGA is the incredible true story of a group of courageous people risking their lives to build a better future in a part of Africa the world's forgotten, and a gripping exposé of the realities of life in the Congo."
The documentary won many awards including a Peabody Award and a Primetime Creative Arts Emmy and was nominated for an Academy Award.
Moonlight director Barry Jenkins will write the adaptation with Leonardo DiCaprio. DiCaprio has used his platform in recent years to advocate for the environment, especially involving climate change. He even created his own charity, The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, that aims to reduce the current climate crisis.
The Virunga National Park Twitter account tweeted their excitement about the adaptation and the team behind it.
