1. Three Palestinian college students shot in a 'hate-motivated crime'

Three Palestinian college students, all 20-years-old, were shot while going for a walk in Burlington, Vermont over the Thanksgiving weekend. Law enforcement has referred to the incident as "a hate-motivated crime," in part because two of the three were wearing keffiyehs – traditional Palestinian scarves.

The suspect, 48-year-old Jason J. Eaton, is currently being held without bond after pleading not guilty. The students — identified as Hisham Awartani, a student at Brown University in Rhode Island; Kinnan Abdalhamid, a student at Haverford College in Pennsylvania; and Tahseen Ahmad, a student at Trinity College in Connecticut — all survived, but Awartani was shot in the spine and is immobilized. His mother is currently attempting to leave the West Bank to visit him.

2. Elon Musk takes PR trip to Israel after anti-Semitic endorsements

Days after publicly embracing an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory popular among White Supremacists, Elon Musk had to make amends by visiting Israel and meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Musk reportedly reached an agreement with Israel “in principle” that would allow Starlink to provide internet access to Gaza, but only using units operated by Israel and with the approval of the Israeli Ministry of Communications.

3. Republicans race to the bottom in GOP primary

As the 2024 presidential election approaches, Republican candidates are continuing their push to win their party's nomination and take on President Joe Biden. Most recently, the advocacy organization Americans for Prosperity Action, which is backed by billionaire Charles Koch and other wealthy conservatives, endorsed Nikki Haley as the alternative to former president Donald Trump.

Haley currently trails Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in the national average, while DeSantis is trailing former President Donald Trump by nearly 50 points in 538’s average.
