Nichols, 29, was hospitalized after a traffic stop on January 7 where five Memphis police officers savagely beat him. He died from his injuries on January 10.

On Friday night, the city of Memphis released body camera and surveillance video that showed the attack, which has been compared to the 1991 beating of Rodney King. Protests have since broke out across the nation, once again calling attention to violence against Black men by police.

All five officers have been removed from duty, and are now facing criminal charges, including second-degree murder. The special unit they belonged to, SCORPION, has also been disbanded.

Nichols loved photography and skateboarding. He is survived by his 4 year old son and loving family, who are currently raising money to build a skatepark in his honor.
