Barbara Walters has passed away at 93 years old, as reported on the evening of December 30, 2022.
Walters’ trailblazing career started when she became the first female co-host of The Today Show in 1962. Over a decade later, in 1976, Walters made history once again by becoming the first female co-anchor of a network evening news program on ABC Evening News. Her growing popularity eventually landed her a coveted spot on 20/20.
In recent years, Walters was best known as one of the creators and cohosts of The View. Though she left the daytime talk show in 2014, Walters remained an important fixture of the series.
Given her long history with ABC, Walters’ passing was first reported by ABC News.
Walters was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1989, won a GLAAD Excellence in Media award in 1996, and got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2007.
The Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger shared a statement regarding Walters’ death that reads:
“Barbara was a true legend, a pioneer not just for women in journalism but for journalism itself. She was a one-of-a-kind reporter who landed many of the most important interviews of our time, from heads of state and leaders of regimes to the biggest celebrities and sports icons. I had the pleasure of calling Barbara a colleague for more than three decades, but more importantly, I was able to call her a dear friend. She will be missed by all of us at The Walt Disney Company, and we send our deepest condolences to her daughter, Jacqueline.”
