Tom Holland did a feature with Esquire about the preparation involved for his upcoming film Cherry, a strong look at mental illness and the struggles faced by veterans.
Going All Out
In the film, Holland plays an army medic who returns from Iraq, and due to undiagnosed PTSD, develops a heroin addiction and starts robbing banks. It is a dark look at the reality of mental illness and the trauma of war.
Holland lost weight, shaved his head, and went pale for this work. This was a drastic change that, according to Holland and the article, deeply upset his friends and family, particular his mother.
"Biggest mistake ever" said Holland of sending film of his convulsing on the floor in a jail cell to his mother (part of the film, of course).
A Change of Pace
The role of heroin addicted veteran is a far cry from his well known works. Holland, is, of course, the fresh new face of Spiderman for the massive Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in two independent films of the character as well as several Avengersfilms.
However, it seems that with Cherry in addition to the rumored Willy Wonka prequelwith Timothée Chalamet, Holland is out to prove he's more than just your friendly neighborhood Spiderman.
